They walked for hours, the sun climbing higher, the grass giving way to a narrow dirt road. Lieutenant Jack O'Reilly led his squad through the countryside, their boots dusty, their eyes scanning for any sign of civilization. The world was quiet-no planes, no gunfire, no voices.

Then they saw the village.

It was small, maybe a dozen houses, clustered around a stone church. Smoke rose from the chimneys, but there were no people in the streets. No children playing. No old men sitting on benches.

"Something's wrong," Private Miller said.

Jack nodded. "Spread out. Check the houses. Stay alert."

They moved through the village, clearing each building, room by room. The houses were empty, but they weren't abandoned. Tables were set for meals. Fires burned in hearths. Kettles boiled on stoves.

"Where is everyone?" Miller asked.

Jack didn't answer. He was standing in the church, staring at the altar. A figure sat in the front pew-a woman, her hair white, her eyes closed.

"Ma'am?" Jack said.

She opened her eyes, looked at him. Her gaze was ancient, tired, sad.

"You're American," she said.

"Yes, ma'am. Where are we?"

She stood, walked toward him. "You're in a place between. Between the war and the peace. Between life and death."

Jack's blood ran cold. "Are we dead?"

The woman smiled, touched his cheek. "Not yet. But you will be, if you don't find your way back."

She pointed to the church door, which now glowed with the same pale light as the door in the forest.

"Go," she said. "Find the door. Find your way home."

Jack turned, called his squad. They gathered in the church, facing the glowing door.

"What is it?" Miller asked.

"Our way out," Jack said.

He opened the door, stepped through. The light swallowed him, and the world went white.

When he opened his eyes, he was back in the forest. The fog was gone. The Germans were gone. His squad was around him, alive, whole.

"What happened?" Miller asked.

Jack looked at the sky, at the trees, at the war that was still waiting.

"I don't know," he said. "But we're back."

They walked toward the American lines, the village forgotten, the door a memory.

But Jack never forgot the woman in the church, or the place between.

And he never stopped wondering if they had really come back at all.
